Life is Hard Without a Cushion
Every one of us already has the seed of mindfulness.
The practice is to cultivate it.
—Thich Nhat Hanh
Life is hard... without a cushion.
Metaphorically, the foundation of life is a hard surface.
No matter how life looks, we all feel
foundational discomforts. If you provide a bit of cushion between you and
the hard surface it feels more comfortable.
Without any deep intentional breaths to inflate that cushion,
your day can feel like laying on an air mattress without any air.
Every roll, fall, stumble, or step, big or small can hurt against the hard surface.
However, your breath can pad life’s inevitable downfalls with mindfulness.
Each day you have the opportunity to cushion yourself
with your mindful mattress.
By creating a cushion for life’s stuff, you are creating space
between you and the hard things which can bring a softer
and calmer response.
All it takes is a few deep inhales...and exhales to fill the cushion
and feel the space.
Let’s do it together now:
*Inhale: 1, 2, 3, 4*
*Exhale: 4, 3, 2, 1*
Maintain your mattress daily for a little more cush in your life.
